The reckless spenders group

Ok, lots of us have been there. For you guys, the first thing to realise is that saving doesn't mean sacrificing. Whether it's a two week holiday or a comfortable retirement that you dream about, saving can help get you what you want. First, identify a couple of things you can change that won't drastically affect your life (see our savings tips for some examples) then whatever you save, put into a savings account. You should look for a savings account that doesn't have any penalties, like the ING Direct Savings Account, as this means that you can dip in and out without being charged. Once you've worked out how much you can afford to save a month you can set up a direct debit so you don't even have to think about it.

The would be savers group

You are fairly careful with your money but find there isn't enough at the end of the month to stick into a savings account. There's a couple of things we would suggest. If you haven't got one already it is worth buying a finance diary where you write down where your money goes. You may find there is some room for improvement. If not, how about just keeping a change jar at home and emptying it into a savings account whenever it is full. You need to look for a savings account that doesn't charge you for withdrawing your money or insist on monthly payments, like ING Direct's Savings Account.

The save to spend group

You guys already know that saving can help get you what you want. Perhaps now might be a good time to think a little further ahead. For example, if you put away just £50 a month, when aged 30, for that rainy day by the time you are 65 you will have £21,000. And that's without interest. Keep your money with a bank that offers a simple and straightforward savings account, like ING Direct, and that money will grow even more.

The save to save group

You are already doing the hard part. All we'd say to you is make sure you make the most of your money. Make sure you know what rate you are getting currently, don't leave your money in a poorly paid account and shop around for a competitive rate. You should also make sure you get the best service from your provider – it's your money after all. ING Direct has award-winning UK call centres and lets you manage your money online or over the phone. If you'd like to know more give us a call.
