Lewis-Francis claims 100m silver

Lewis-Francis claims 100m silver

Mark Lewis-Francis, outmaneuvered team-mate Dwain Chambers, to win a surprise silver medal in the 100 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.

The former world junior title, who was considered an underdog at the event, made a clean dip for the line in 10.18 seconds for a blanket finish.

Dwain, who was the crowd's favourite to contend with France's Christophe Lemaitre for the win, fell back and finished fifth, while Christophe took the gold in 10.11 secs.

France's Martial Mbandjock claimed bronze ahead of defending champion Francis Obikwelu of Portugal.

Mark, who helped the British 4x100m relay team secure a surprise gold medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004, has been struggling with injuries in recent seasons and had missed the entire 2008 campaign due to a torn Achilles tendon.

He said: "For me to come here and finish second when I was told I wouldn't make the final, I am so happy.

"For all the knocks I have taken this is the biggest comeback ever and the biggest boost."
