Stonehenge wooden 'twin' discovered
22 Jul 10
The mystery of Stonehenge has deepened after a "twin" henge was discovered hundreds of yards away from the World Heritage Site.
Archaeologists believe the circular ditch was the site of a ceremonial monument made from a free-standing wooden structure.
The feature, dating from the late Neolithic period, would have been visible from Stonehenge and is thought to have been constructed in a similar pattern.
The discovery came in only the second week of a three-year international project involving teams from British universities, Austria, Germany, Norway and Sweden.
Professor Vince Gaffney, of the University of Birmingham, said: "It will completely change the way we think about the landscape around Stonehenge.
"People have tended to think that as Stonehenge reached its peak, it was the paramount monument, existing in splendid isolation.
"This discovery is completely new and extremely important in how we understand Stonehenge and its landscape."
