Strawberries herald start of summer

Strawberries herald start of summer

The first British strawberries have arrived for sale in supermarkets, signifying the onset of summer.

Around 25 Morrisons stores around the south of England have put the fruit on their shelves and Tesco's home-grown strawberries are set to hit 15 of its stores in Kent from Friday.

Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Asda are also expected to bring out their berries soon.

A Tesco spokesperson said the arrival of the fruit can be linked to the 15% increase in sales of summer clothes at its stores.

Tesco strawberry buyer Ben Reed said: "Not only are we enjoying the first warm weather of the year this week but we've also now got the first British strawberries which means that summer is well and truly on the way.

"The arrival of the first home grown strawberries is extremely significant - not only does it herald the start of British Summer Time but it is also the start of the UK growing season.

"Many shoppers think of the first home grown strawberries as being bitter and hard but the ones we've got our hands on are delicious."

S&A Produce in Kent, which is the biggest glasshouse grower of the fruit in the UK, produces most of the strawberries for the supermarket.
