Giant Scalextric event to be held

Giant Scalextric event to be held

Fans of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will be able to emulate their stars' skills at a Grand Prix Challenge.

In the same month as the start of the Formula 1 season there will be a giant four-lane Scalextric - a model car racing set - at Wakefield market. Budding racing enthusiasts will be able to pit their wits on the huge course which will be held in the market hall from 10am to 4pm on Saturday March 20.

The event is kicking off the Saturday's are Special programme - a campaign launched by Wakefield Council which will see weekly events or specialist markets every Saturday at the markets Quarter on Union Street.

Wakefield Council cabinet member for regeneration, culture and sport Denise Jeffery, who has responsibility for the markets, said: "Many people have a passion for driving and while we are all not fortunate enough to be able to drive a Grand Prix car, this could be the next best thing. We hope to see plenty of visitors wanting to test their Scalextric skills in the race for the chequered flag."

The event will be fully staffed throughout and is free to enter. There will be prizes for the fastest laps.
