TV host to operate car on coffee

TV host Jem Stansfield is set to go on a 210-mile road trip in a car that will run on espressos.
The presenter is driving his experimental car, which operates on coffee grounds, from London to Manchester for BBC1's Bang Goes The Theory.
The car has been created from scrap and needs refuelling every 40 miles and is expected to use more than 10,000 espressos for the entire journey.
The vehicle, which can convert coffee grounds into flammable gases that can be used in place of petrol, was designed by Stansfield to demonstrate the usage of alternative energy sources.
He aims to encourage young people to think about innovative ways to exploit the energy in waste products and find new sources for daily needs.
He said: "Everyone recognises that coffee can give a person a bit of a boost, but many probably had no idea it had enough energy locked away to power a car.
"It's important for kids to understand that power is not something that is mystically there, simply at the flick of a switch or by pushing a pedal."

And are the environmental implications of so much coffee being produced are being overlooked?
