Hadrian's Wall set to be illuminated

Historic monument Hadrian’s Wall is set to be illuminated from coast to coast by over 1,000 volunteers from across the world.
The event has been scheduled to take place on March 13, when “illuminators” will light 500 beacon fires positioned at intervals along the 84-mile (135km) Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail.
They will light a gas beacon or a flare, after taking up positions at 275-yard (250m) intervals along the path. The line of light will remain illuminated for about half an hour.
The first gas beacon will be lit at Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend, North Tyneside, with the final one lit at Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast.
In its journey westwards, the line of light will pass through Newcastle and Carlisle and some of England’s most beautiful countryside.
The volunteers will be given training on health and safety at muster points throughout Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, North Tyneside and Cumbria.
Led by Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd, the ambitious project has been expected to bring a massive boost to the local economy.
Company chief Linda Tuttiett said: “After many months of planning we're just days away from seeing this stunning World Heritage Site illuminated by hundreds of lights.
“We’ve been delighted by how much enthusiasm this event has generated, with people coming from across the UK and overseas to take part as illuminators or just to watch the spectacle from one of the events.”
