Yorkshire pudding EU protection bid
08 Mar 10
Plans are under way to get Yorkshire pudding the same protected status as Champagne and Parma ham to stop producers from outside the country capitalising on the famous name.
Discussions are on between three manufacturers, including the Aunt Bessie brand, to apply for a special protection under European Union rules.
According to the Regional Food Group for Yorkshire and Humber, which is backing the proposals, the name made its first appearance in an 18th-century recipe by food writer Hannah Glasse whose dishes were very different from others.
The group's research and development director, Sarah Knapper, hoped that this would help the bid for European rights on the Sunday roast favourite.
A special protection would mean the label can be used only for dishes made within Yorkshire or Humberside.
Ms Knapper said: "It would prevent people anywhere else in the world from making it and calling it Yorkshire pudding."
Restaurants elsewhere across the country may have to refer to it as Yorkshire-style pudding in their menus.
But she admitted: "The recipe is made by so many people, that this could be a hurdle to the bid."
