Cycling celebrities hit £1m target
08 Mar 10
The celebrity team who cycled from John O'Groats to Land's End are celebrating after having smashed their £1 million fund-raising target.
The stars have raised a total of £1,006,509 for Sport Relief so far and hope the figure will rise. They have urged the public to continue donating money.
Those who took part included Fearne Cotton, Miranda Hart, Russell Howard, Patrick Kielty, Davina McCall, David Walliams and Jimmy Carr.
The team managed a challenging four-day stint through night and day on their bikes.
Walliams said: "It has been an amazing challenge, so much harder and more gruelling than any of us thought it would be.
"To have raised a million pounds in four days is a fantastic thing - thanks so much for everyone who sponsored us, it kept us going."
During the non-stop relay ride, the celebrities battled against brutal conditions, including blizzards, snow capped mountains and temperatures as low as minus 15C (5F).
Cycling for nearly 82 hours in total, they suffered falls, cuts, bruises and saddle sores.
Cotton said as the event neared its end: "We know that we need to try and keep something in reserve for the hills in Cornwall but to be honest I'm just running on empty now anyway so we will just have to see how it goes."
The team's efforts will help vulnerable people in the UK and some of the world's poorest countries.
People wishing to sponsor the team are urged to go to
