Derby road named after Lara Croft

Derby road named after Lara Croft

A new ring road in Derby is going to be named after the Tomb Raider video game and movie star Lara Croft, after 89% of people voted for it.
Derby City Council said that the stretch of road from the Osmaston Road to Burton Road of the new £36 million inner ring road will be called Lara Croft Way.
The council shortlisted the name for an online poll as the character was created by Derby-based company Core Design in the mid-1990s and Actress Angelina Jolie played the role in subsequent movies.
Councillor Lucy Care, in charge of planning and transportation at the council, said: "She was created in Derby and this naming will identify a time and place in history where she can stand alongside some of the more traditional icons of the city."
Another stretch of the ring road from the Burton Road to Stafford Street will be named Mercian Way, in honour of the army regiment which recruits soldiers from the area. It received 6% of public vote.
Other options for the road's name for the online poll - in which nearly 28,000 people took part - included the first Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed and the famous Rolls-Royce engine Merlin.
