Amazon triumph for Blue Peter star
01 Mar 10
Cheers and celebratory gunfire greeted Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton as she completed a 2,000-mile kayak along the Amazon river for Sport Relief.
The 26-year-old broke a number of world records when she crossed the finish line at Almerim in Brazil, 2,010 miles downstream from her starting point near Nauta in Peru on January 20.
Skelton, who had never been in a kayak before starting training, paddled around 60 miles a day for six days a week and suffered blisters and heatstroke as well as spotting wildlife including anacondas.
Skelton said: "It's been a massive adventure that's thrown up challenges most days. It's been tough but I've had enough highs to make it more than worthwhile. I'm very lucky to have amazing people in my life who've picked me up when things got hard and most importantly inspired me to carry on."
Sport Relief will take place from March 19 to 21 and will raise money for charity schemes in the UK as well as developing countries.
