Marilyn-inspired shoes go on sale
08 Feb 10
A pair of giant stiletto heels, inspired by the ones Marilyn Monroe wore in the iconic scene from The Seven Year Itch when she stood on an air vent, are going on sale this week.
Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos has created the 13ft by 9.8ft artwork, dubbed Marilyn, using stainless steel pans and lids.
It is valued at £100,000 to £150,000 and is among 52 lots that are set to go under the hammer at Christie's in London as part of the Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale.
Ms Vasconcelos's Golden Independent Heart, a 14ft rotating heart made of plastic cutlery, fetched £163,250 - far above its estimate of £80,000 to £120,000 - at a Christie's auction in June last year.
The collection to be auctioned on Thursday represents a broad spectrum of art from the last 60 years and has a total pre-sale estimate of £26,290,000 to £38,260,000.
